1. Family Tree (Intro)

The best opening track to an album. Its dark and sinister undertones get me everytime. Being unable to escape your family (tree), your own flesh and blood and the cycle of pain passed down from it, (especially in Ethel Cain's case) is so true but always blows my mind each time I think about it. "Jesus can always reject his father, but he cannot escape his mother's blood" The lyrics peak for themselves.



2. American Teenager

Ah yes, Ethel's most upbeat banger ever. Though this song seems happy-go-lucky, the lyrics say otherwise. As it says in the title, this song is about being an 'American Teenager' and how unrealistic the standards and expectations are to truly live like one. I like to think that this song reminds me that 'The American Dream' isn't as carefree and wonderful as people make it out to be. Although recognised as a pop song and for having a cheerful melody, it's almost melancholic when you actually listen to the lyrics and the true meaning behind the track.



3. A House In Nebraska

As soon as I hear those dang piano notes, it's already over for me. This is one of those songs that no matter how much you listen to, will somehow always make you feel emotional each time it comes on. This track never fails to bring me to tears. Be it a certain lyric or verse, the same lyric over and over again, or just the whole song entirely. There's something so devastatingly beautiful within this song and though so laced with pain, I live for every second of it. This song is about Ethel's first love, Willoughby Tucker. I won't go into him and Ethel's lore here too much (I will next time!) but they are so freaking heartbreaking. Ethel reminises about their relationship before he left town and never came back. They would run away to an abandoned house, hence the "House In Nebraska" which was never actually in Nebraska, but more so them making their own comfort in the storm, and a dream of an escape from the real world. I don't think I'll ever be able to put into words how much this song means to me or how to express the emotions I've gotten from listening to this track. It's such a tragic yet haunting song in the most lovely way possible. One of my absolute favourite songs from her.



4. Western Nights

This song has done irreplaceable damage to me. I find myself inexplicably devastated whenever I listen to this. It's probably because I know the meaning behind the song and how it correlates with Ehel's story. The main guise of this track is about an abusive lover (more so about Ethel's former boyfriend Logan Phelps if we're getting into depth about it) and a toxic, harmful, and destructive relationship that follows. Although it's painful and wrong, Ethel still decides to stay, and clings onto the abuse, accepting it as love. She uses this situation as a form of escape. I love this song with my entire heart and this would also be one of my top songs from Ethel Cain. Even though I myself haven't been in the same circumstance, I understand her. None of this was your fault Ethel, you deserved so much better. I'm gonna go cry about this for the millionth time now.



5. Family Tree

"These crosses all over my body" what a line to start the song off with. This song lives in my veins. The electric guitar, the church bells tolling in certain parts, the vocals, each lyric, everything. This song symbolises themes of intergenerational trauma, inescapeable family legacy and of course, religous themes. It defines the notion of trying to outrun inherited suffering and violence, but in the end it will eventually find its way back to you. This song also hints at Ethel discovering a dark, disturbing secret about the Cain family, basically tying her personal pain back to none other than her family itself. The unsettling realisation that there's inevitable doom waiting to be passed down to you is such an insane concept (which is very much true).



6. Hard Times

This song is such an achingly melancholy tune for me. The kind of track that makes you feel immense sadness for no real reason. "Hard Times" dives into topics about childhood sexual abuse, particularly the same abuse Ethel suffered at the hands of her own father, the town preacher, and the exhaustion of being unable to forget the pain and scars that come with it. It captures the damage during and after the abuse and emphasises how much trauma you carry even after you've long escaped from it. Lyrics like "I'm tired of you, still tied to me" highlights this notion heavily, and the extensive grip Ethel's abuser truly has over her until the very end.



7. Thoroughfare

The track where things take a turn for the worst (est). Known as the happier, country-folk song out of the album, "Thoroughfare" is deprived from a much darker underlying backstory. Ethel's former boyfriend Logan Phelps was arrested and killed by the police due to a failed bank robbery (Logan made her the runaway driver...), forcing her to flee (was talked about in "Western Nights"). While on the run she meets Isaiah Abram, (yes I had to cross out his name because I hate him very much.) who offers to give her a ride. While traveling west together, she begins to become infatuated with him, believing this could be her fresh start, and her chance at experiencing true love. What Ethel doesn't know is that this is a trap, and Isaiah is actually manipulating her to gain her complete trust before eventually doing terrible things to her later on in the album. What you also need to know is the fact that Ethel Cain can be an unreliable narrator, meaning that some things she says could be far from the truth, as a means of romanticising and masking the reality that actually took place. Fans interpret what really happened wasn't Ethel going along with Isaiah willingly, but being forced into his truck and kidnapped. Hence, she changes the narrative to cope with what truly went down.
